Flashback Friday: Kate from see kate sew

Welcome to Flashback Friday! Most of you probably know today’s guest, the talented Kate from see kate sew. She is a mom to a sweet little boy, and a spankin’-BRAND new baby girl (if you follower her on instagram – @seekatesew – you may have been lucky enough to get a peek).

It’s hard to know where to begin with all that Kate creates. If you are pregnant, Kate’s tutorials are a must! She always knows how to add the perfect touch of feminity to any project. Kate also designs fabulous patterns, and I think with the new arrival we’re going to be lucky enough to enjoy lots of baby girl projects in the near future! We’re thrilled to have her join us today!

Thanks for having me here Abby! I have been loving this series! I’m Kate from see kate sew. I mostly sew clothes these days, but today I’m sharing my first quilt!

I was in high school when I really started sewing and designing. I think it was then that I decided that sewing was a hobby I hoped to turn into a career someday. I used my mom’s old Kenmore, yellowed with age, to make my very first quilt! It felt like a big deal, even though the design is so simple, just squares, and it’s small. But, a quilt! That’s real sewing, right?!

I still remember making multiple trips to Joann picking out various fabrics to form the perfect combination. Although I probably purchased over 10 different prints (and way too much yardage of each), I settled on 5 favorites and used muslin in between. I still love the look of muslin, even though it is used for “rough drafts” of garments. Simple and pretty.

Over a period of a few weeks or a month I worked on the quilt after school. I backed the quilt in a pink floral print. I made up my own way of binding because I knew I wouldn’t ever finish a hand binding. I quilted it with simple lines. I was so proud of it! (I still am!)

There’s something about making your first quilt, or doll, or garment, or anything, that makes you never want to get rid of it. I think I’ll have this thing forever!

Thanks Kate! I hope you’re getting lots of rest and time to snuggle that little angel. I think we can all relate about the first projects we’ve made – there really is something special about it, isn’t there? I love the simplicity of the squares – so precious. I hope you all enjoy your weekend!

  2. Beautiful quilt, Kate, and it’s so cool how you already had in your mind that you wanted to make your career by sewing in college! Wow, wish I had that foresight – wouldn’t have taken so many business classes. ;)
