DIY Custom Fridge Magnets

Weston and I made some fun fridge magnets the other day while Wyatt was at school, and I’m going to show you how to make your own using your Silhouette machine!IMG_4513edit

I still feel like a total newbie when it comes to using my Silhouette Cameo, but was surprised at how easy these magnets were to make. I thought they’d be mainly used by Wyatt, who’s in the exciting early reader stage, but surprisingly all three kids have loved playing with them. Lola has perhaps had a little too much fun, so we now try to keep them a little higher than she can reach…

I started by brainstorming a page full of words that I thought could easily be mixed and matched – now that Wyatt has had the chance to make phrases and use the magnets for a few days, he’s given me a lot more ideas for words which I’m sure will fill another page. Mom, we need the word “are”… I spaced the words out so there would be room for cutting around each word. I should have clicked “show registration marks” before I began, but remember how I said I’m still a newbie? It would have saved some time, but you’ll see I added them in later and made some adjustments where needed.magnet1Next, I added a rectangular border around each word.magnet2

And tada! Registration marks :). Like I said, adding these before starting would have been a better way to go, but it was easy enough to adjust my layout. The registration marks allow you to use the “print and cut” feature as you’ll soon see. The Silhouette is able to scan the marks so that it can cut precisely where you need it to after printing the images to your home printer. At this point, I made sure all of the text was set to not cut, and all of the borders were set to cut.magnet3

I then printed the page to my home printer, making sure to feed the paper in correctly so the printing would end up on the white side of the paper.IMG_4506editIMG_4508edit

Once it was printed, I sent it to the Silhouette to cut around each word. The machine will first detect the registration marks, and then will cut away!IMG_4511edit

I carefully peeled off the paper from the cutting mat, and the magnets were ready for the fridge!IMG_4512edit

Wyatt is at such a good age to use these magnets, and it’s fun to see him come up with phrases, especially with words relevant to his own life.IMG_4562edit
