Floral + Stripes + Seafarer Top + Maxi Skirt

seafarer top maxi skirt

A couple of weeks ago as I was getting ready for church, I decided on a whim to make a new skirt to wear. Joel thought I was crazy, but 30 min later I had this knit maxi skirt made, and was so excited to have something different than my usual post-baby skirts and dresses.

I made the skirt similar to this one and this one, with a yoga style waistband. So comfy and nice to wear all year long. The floral fabric is from Girl Charlee.

Then I got another crazy idea that I needed a new Seafarer Top to go with the skirt. We had to leave for church in 30 min, so I was a little nervous, but I did it! It literally took me about 20 min from cutting to finish, which is my personal best time for a Seafarer :). When Joel came out of the shower and I told him I just made a top to go with my shirt, he thought I was joking.

I cut my usual size medium for the top, and angled it out about a half inch at the sides to allow me the extra room needed for my present body shape :). I just eye-balled it since my medium pattern was already cut out and assembled, but the way the pattern is nested allows you to easily cut different sizes for the top and bottom if needed (and has instructions for doing so).

I also made the curve of the hemline more dramatic, and I love how it turned out.

The funny thing is, I’ve had this neon pink striped fabric since I went shopping in the LA Fashion District last year (from Michael Levine), but thought I’d eventually use it for some pjs for Lola. I never imagined it for clothing for myself, but when I saw it with the floral fabric, I knew it was meant to be.

The shirt is a new staple in my summer wardrobe, and I’ve already worn it several times. It was one of those rare times where it all worked out perfectly even though it was all on a whim – made it in 20 min, the fit was great, and I used up some more fabric from my stash.

Oh, and I may have made Lola a matching outfit. How could I resist? And it might have been 30 min before church again… She was definitely not in the mood for photos when I took mine, so I’ll be sharing her outfit soon :).
