A Plaid Blazer for Wyatt

We’ve made it to the end of my Christmas sewing (you can find the other posts here: Hattie, Lola, and Weston)! I get to finish off today with Wyatt’s outfit, which definitely took the most amount of time and energy. I used an Ottobre boy’s blazer pattern from the 6/2014 issue. I saw an Ottobre ad in Stylo this fall featuring this blazer pattern, and it was a done deal. I was in love. I had already purchased the plaid flannel from Jo-Ann with plans to make a matching vest to Weston, and knew it would be perfect for the look of the blazer I was imagining.

I also finally get to share some photos of all the kids together!

I was drawn to the wide lapels of the blazer pattern, and the retro feel. I ordered the magazine, and when it arrived, I got a bit nervous. I had never sewn with an Ottobre pattern before, and if you’re not familiar with them, the patterns all come on the same sheets, overlapping each other, so they need to be traced. They also do not have seam allowances, so that has to be added.

It took me two hours to trace the pieces and add seam allowances! I’m sure the next time I use an Ottobre pattern it will go faster, as it was all new to me, but it took some time to get familiar with how it all worked.

Ottobre patterns also do not have illustrations, only written instructions. Normally that wouldn’t concern me too much, but as this was my first blazer sewn, I was pretty nervous! But I made sure to take my time and I can’t even tell you how happy I am with the finished product! I’d definitely recommend this for a boy’s blazer pattern.

Wyatt’s measurements were a bit smaller than the smallest pattern size. The pattern calls for 10% stretch, and the flannel I used has no stretch, so I was hoping that would balance out the size being a bit large. It worked out great, with it having a bit of room to grow, but not being too large. The sleeve lengths are a tad on the long side, but I’m sure soon enough I’ll have the opposite problem ;).

There was a lot of pattern matching to be done. I think I could use a break from pattern matching for a bit after all of that, but it was worth it in the end, and having everything line up nicely makes a garment look so much more professional.

I used some fabric from my stash for the lining, which had a bit of stretch in it and wasn’t the greatest to sew with. I ended up switching to my walking foot, and that helped, but it was still a bit annoying to sew with. I do love the look of it though, so I guess it was worth it. Maybe…

And surprise, surprise, here are those darn metal buttons again! Hehe, this won’t be the last you see of them ;).

Like Weston, Wyatt wore his bowtie that I made him for Christmas two years ago. The texture of the corduroy went perfect with the flannel, so why make a new one, right?!

Wyatt is seven now, and is growing up much too quickly. He is such a good natured boy, which I especially appreciate when taking photos of all four kids together!

This blazer is really impressive! Nice plaid matching, and beautiful sewing overall. I traced off an Ottobre magazine pattern once before realizing that it was about 6 sizes larger than I needed…. that was a bummer!

  4. I love seeing it all come together!! The kids all look great. Nice work. They’re lucky kids to have such a talented mama.
