Magrath Dresses for Christmas

Magrath Dress PatternEarlier this week I showed you the vests I made for my boys for Christmas, and today it’s all about my girls in their Magrath Dresses!  The pattern should be ready for testing in early January, and you can see the first version I made here. UPDATE: you can now get the Magrath Dress & Tunic PDF Pattern HERE!

I found the herringbone suiting, the mustard quilting cotton, and the red linen all at Jo-Ann. I originally wanted to use plaid for both of their dresses, but when I saw the herringbone I just couldn’t resist, and I’m so glad it worked out the way it did!

I didn’t realize until after I had began making Lola’s dress that it must have subconsciously been my attempt to redeem myself after ruining the original black and white herringbone fabric that I was going to use on this dress. Ha!

Both zippers were from the same bunch of vintage goodness that my friend gave me recently, and I love how the opposite fabric/zipper colors worked out between the two dresses.

Poor Lola managed to give herself a black eye in the night the other day, and I knew it would take a while to heal, so I decided we’d just capture the memory ;). That’s life with kids, right?

A sweetheart yoke is one of my favorite design elements ever, and I love how it gives the opportunity to mix and match fabrics.

This was the first time I’ve made my girls matching (or almost matching) dresses, and it was so fun! I wish I had time to make myself a matching skirt, but maybe that will still happen sometime. Won’t hold my breath on that one though :).

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas season! I’m looking forward to relaxing and time with family and friends, and hope you get to enjoy those things also! Thanks for reading!

  5. Abby, these dresses are precious! I love the fabric (no surprise there) and the sweetheart neckline is so cute. Also, major hair envy with your girls. They are both just adorable!

  6. I love the style lines of this dress and agree–it would be lovely in women’s sizes too. How does one apply to be a tester for your patterns? I would happily sign up to help!

  7. You have such a darling family! I love the coordinating dresses, and I’m impressed that you got a photo of FOUR kids all looking at the camera and smiling! =)
I have a question about the Magrath dresses… is the yoke portion sewn onto the lower portion and then top-stitched, or is it just top-stitched?

    1. Thanks Charity! And let’s just say there were a LOT of outtakes ;). The yoke portion is topstitched onto the lower portion. I really wanted to stitch it first and then topstitch, but it’s pretty much impossible if you want a nice deep curve and point. If you look back at the first version I made (brown and floral for Hattie), I stitched it first, and you can see the difference. It’s a much more subtle sweetheart shape that way.

  8. Getting caught up! Saw your picture on FB, but oh my, these pictures are so great. Your kids are all beautiful, and I love, love their dresses.

    1. Thank you so much! And now they’ll be wearing the same style of dress for Easter, hehe. I promise I’ll change it up for the next holiday :).
