A Christmas Sullivan Dress

Today marks the first of one of my favorite group of posts of the year – my kids’ Christmas outfits! Every Christmas I love to take photos of my kids (I let my husband and myself off the hook and we take family photos in the summer), and it’s always fun to see how the kids have changed from year to year. This year I’m starting with the dress I made for Hattie using our Sullivan Dress Pattern.

I’ve had this maxi dress envisioned for months, and at the last moment started to second guess the wide stripes. I eventually decided to go with my original plan, and am so glad that I did!

sullivan dressFor the bodice, I used Robert Kaufman’s gorgeous metallic gold yarn dyed linen. I was nervous that it wouldn’t be pressing-friendly, but it sewed and pressed like a dream and I love the subtle shimmer it gives the dress.

sullivan dressThe black and white skirt fabric is from IKEA. When I found it in my local store several months ago, I purchased 4 yards so it was nice to finally use some of it! It’s a home decor weight, so it gives the skirt really great body and fullness.

sullivan dressUnlike Lola, Hattie is proportionately sized, which kind of makes sewing extra fun for her because I don’t usually have to worry about doing any pattern adjustments. I made her a straight up size 3 Sullivan Dress, with sleeves, maxi length, and a scalloped bodice (I keep saying my next one will be with a straight hem bodice but I can’t ever resist those scallops!).

sullivan dressI used a fussy cut fabric covered button for the back closure to add a pop of black and white to the bodice.

sullivan dressI knew that a maxi length dress on a 2.5 year old after a rainy day would likely not fare well with the white stripes, and boy was I right! By the time we were done, there were large mud splashes all over the back of her dress, cause what 2.5 year old wouldn’t head straight to a muddy rock pile when given the chance? Luckily, this happened after her photos were done, and I was able to get all of the mud out of her dress, which was definitely a relief. Whew.
