Behavior Jars – Reward the Positive in Your Kids!

Discipline is a hard thing, especially with a 6, 4, and almost 2 year old in the house. Throw in the fact that I’m 39 weeks pregnant with number 4, and you can imagine why the subject of behavior has become a frequent discussion in our household lately. After an especially challenging week with my boys last month, Joel and I decided to try a new discipline strategy. Time outs haven’t been super successful in our home recently, and we’ve wanted to encourage the boys’ good behavior rather than just disciplining the bad, so we came up with a new plan that we’ve heard has worked well for several of our friends.

I’m sure you’ve heard of similar ideas, but basically, each boy has his own jar, and good behavior earns a pom pom into the jar. Sometimes it’s a large pom pom, sometimes it’s a small one, but we try to recognize any little thing they do that is positive throughout the day. And of course, when they make a choice that’s not so great, we take a pom pom out. As a family, we decided on a prize for each of them before we started, and when the jar gets full, they get the reward. Weston is already the proud new owner of a Ninja Turtles costume, and Wyatt earned a computer game that he’s been wanting.

So far, I’d say it’s been really successful. Now that we’ve done it for a few weeks, I have to remind myself to be consistent, but overall it’s been very positive for all of us. Have you ever tried a similar idea? How has it worked for you?

Joel picked up the jars and a huge bag of pom poms at Michaels, and I made a label for each jar using one of my favorite products, Silhouette’s clear sticker paper.

I used the print & cut feature, and in just a few minutes had my labels ready to go! Here’s a quick video about the print & cut feature…

Now I’m imagining everything else that I need to make labels for… My pantry, my sewing room and office…

  1. I do something like this with Lanae. She has to earn 10 of the pompoms for 10 minutes of iPad time. She loves it and gets so excited. Its helped… but being consistent can be a challenge. I think its great that you can make a jar of pompoms look so cool! :)

  2. Such a great idea to encourage the good behavior! And I have to agree with Carisa. – the jars look amazing!

  3. We did this when our 4 out of control nephews came to live with us for a while. We had everyone even the other kids watching for good behavior it was that scarce. But they are doing better noe that they are a little older.

  4. How does this work with your 2 year old? Any tips I’m Afraid my two year old boy won’t understand. But love this idea.

    1. Hi Brittany, most 2 year olds will love getting the positive reinforcement, even if they don’t totally understand what’s going on! And slowly they’ll begin to “get it” more and more, so it’s never really too early to start!
