Baby Leather Moccasins

I made these little mocassins for Hattie about a month or so ago, but haven’t had a chance to blog about them until now. As you can see, they’re already well worn in, and have gotten a ton of use already. The leather fridge is curled up perfectly, and they are so soft! I can’t wait till she grows out of them so I can make her another pair.

I used the Lil Papoose Moccasins Pattern by Peek-a-Book Pattern Shop, and made some adjustments so that the middle fringe could be wider. Christie from A Lemon Squeezy Home and Jill from Homemade by Jill were my go-to girls for the changes, and I kept their instagram photos and suggestions handy while making this pair.

Overall they were easy and quick to put together. It was my first time working with leather, and after the first moccasin, I needed to adjust the center fringe to be narrower, so I had to (!) rip out some stitches. And as we all know, leather doesn’t let you do that without leaving the scars to show your mistakes, so one moccasin has some needle holes. It didn’t bother me enough to make a whole new shoe (I have just enough leather to make another full pair, and didn’t want to cut into that), and it’s barely noticeable when she wears them, so I’ll chalk it up to a learning experience.

I made size 6-12m, which is perfect for Hattie. It’s still weird for me to have an average sized baby, since all of my others were so tiny.

It may sound funny to say that my 8 month old loves her shoes, but she really does love these! She loves to grab them and play with the fringe, and can’t keep her hands off of them. LOL.

I will most definitely be making more of these, and probably in a bigger size for Lola next year when we’re out of the rainy season.

This little girl is on the move these days. She is my earliest crawler, and skipped the whole army-crawling phase all together. Too many places to go, I guess ;).

  1. What a doll you have on your hands! She is just adorable! And those moccasins! Love. Where did you get your leather? Did you order it somewhere or get it from a fabric shop?
