White Dresser Makeover

Today I’m sharing my most recent furniture makeover! I’m so happy with how this white dresser makeover turned out, and can’t wait to show you the details!

I found this really great quality, solid Basset dresser on Craigslist after searching for months for the perfect piece to makeover for my bedroom, and to go along with my DIY Herringbone Headboard. I loved the beautiful curved fronts, dovetailed drawers, and knew that it would be worth putting in a lot of time to paint. It was in great condition as is, just not the color I wanted.

After removing the hardware (and labeling what drawer goes where!), I cleaned and lightly sanded the entire piece, and then spray primed (I always use Kilz Oil Based Spray Primer) a couple of coats.

Next I painted the dresser and mirror with Sherwin-Williams ProClassic, which is a latex-based enamel paint. I used an eggshell finish, but in hindsight might have been happier with a semi-gloss so it would be a bit more wipeable long term. The paint is pretty expensive, but if you wait until there’s a 40% off sale (or just luck out like I did), it’s not too bad. I really enjoyed using it, and definitely will use it again for my next furniture project.

The ProClassic paint is made to be durable enough and dry hard enough to not need a topcoat, so I decided to test this out and didn’t do one, which felt wrong on many levels because I love topcoats ;), but so far I’m super happy with it and I think it will stand up really well to wear and tear (and would be even better if I had used a semi-gloss like I mentioned). I’ve had problems with water-based polyacrylic yellowing on white paint, and didn’t want to risk it if I didn’t need to with this project.

After painting a few coats, I lightly distressed all the edges.

I initially wanted to use new hardware, but couldn’t find anything that I liked better than the original, so I ended up cleaning it up with a vinegar solution and keeping it. I love the look of it against the white paint, so I’m glad it worked out this way.

It makes me happy every time I put my clothes away in this dresser!
