The varying temperatures in Spring make it a great time to take advantage of layering, and what better way to do it than with a light, airy scarf!

I love that scarves are both practical and stylish. They can be a great accessory to any outfit, and are easy and comfortable to wear.

Let’s get started!

Materials:
1 yd 58-60” wide or 2yd 45” wide lightweight apparel fabric (the gold pineapple print I used can be found in select Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores)
2 yd pom pom trim
zipper foot
basic sewing supplies – scissors, thread, pins, hand needle

Cut fabric 30” wide x 58-60” long (the width of fabric if using 58-60” wide fabric).

Place edge of pom pom trim along right side of one long edge of fabric and stitch in place using ¼” seam allowance.

Measure width of pom pom trim base. Right sides together, fold fabric in half, matching long raw edges. Stitch together using zipper foot seam allowance slightly larger than width of pom pom trim base (this will hide the base in the finished scarf). Alternatively, if you wish the base to be partially visible, make the seam allowance slightly smaller than the measured width of base.

Turn scarf right side out and press flat along stitched edge. Lay scarf flat, folding to place short raw edges together.

Flip top short raw edge over once, creating twist in scarf.

Keeping twist in place, pin right sides of short raw edges together (after the first few pins turn the scarf inside out to finish pinning). Stitch around pinned edges, leaving 4” opening. Note: If using the full width of fabric, ensure seam allowance is large enough to cover selvage.

Use needle and thread to stitch opening closed.

  1. First of all.. Great tutorial and pics and fabric. I found it very easy to make but the hard part..I don’t know how to make it sit nicely like in the pic, could you help with either explaining it or with pics would be great? Thanks so much

    1. I think the biggest factor in getting the scarf to lay nicely is the fabric used (I know this isn’t helpful after you’ve already made it ;)), it’s important for it to have nice drape and not be stiff like a quilting cotton would. Other than that, I just take a minute to fiddle with it and tuck the folds into place how I’d like them!
