DIY Wall Pocket Organizer Tutorial

DIY Wall Pocket Organizer

Hi sewing friends! As you know, I’ve slowly been working on decorating my girls’ room. Today I get to share my latest project, and this DIY Wall Pocket Organizer Tutorial!

DIY Wall Pocket Organizer

Last summer I created a DIY Vinyl Bunny Wall, and more recently added the DIY Name String Art to the wall.

The pockets are roomy, and will even fit letter sized pages to help you organize whatever you’d like! Using a heavy duck canvas fabric helps to create a sturdy organizer without the need for interfacing, and I was thrilled to find the perfect pink at my local Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores.

My favorite part of this organizer is the fantastic gold metallic bias tape. I’ve been waiting for an excuse to sew with it, and it really gave the perfect pop to this project!

Supplies:
1 1/4yd duck canvas fabric
Double fold extra wide bias tape (I used 3 packages of Wrights Gold Metallic)
¾” wooden dowel
3M large hooks (I used large hooks found at my local Jo-Ann store, be sure that the hook is large enough to hold the wooden dowel)
Spray paint (I used Krylon Gold Metallic Shimmer)
E6000 glue (optional to hold dowel to fabric and hooks)
Level and measuring tape for hanging organizer

Cut:
Backing: 23”x34.5”
Pockets (cut 2): 31”x12”

To begin, apply bias tape to top of each pocket. To do so, open folds of bias tape and right side down, align raw edge to raw edge of wrong side of pocket. Stitch along fold line closest to raw edges. Fold bias tape back along fold lines, wrapping around to right side of pocket. With bias tape just covering first stitch line, stitch to right side of fabric, close to folded edge.

Fold backing and pockets in half lengthwise and press to create a center crease in each. These will be used to help place pockets in later steps.

Press one pocket piece as pictured, creating a pleat with fold line meeting center crease. Pleat should be 1” wide.

Press adjacent outer edge of pocket as pictured, creating a pleat with fold ½” from outer raw edge. Pleat should be 1” wide. Repeat pleats on opposite outer pocket edge.

Place pocket 1 ½” from bottom edge of backing, matching center creases. Stitch pocket to backing along center crease.

Pin side and bottom edges of pocket to backing, keeping pleats in place. Stitch along pinned edges, ¼” from edges of pocket.

Press top raw edge of organizer ½” toward wrong side. Press folded edge 3” toward wrong side. Stitch folded edge in place close to edge of fold, creating a casing. Stitch again, ¼” above first stitch line.

Insert dowel into top casing and use level and measuring tape to hang organizer with 3M hooks. If desired (recommended if children will be using organizer), place a couple small drops of E6000 glue between casing and dowel and dowel and hook to help secure in place.
