Gifts for Sewists

Hi! Can you believe that Christmas is next month?! Now that Halloween is in our rear view mirrors, if you’re like me then gift giving is on your mind as we gear up for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Today I’m going to help you with those on your list who like to sew! This could basically be my own Christmas wish list, except I already have and use all of the items I mention, so feel free to just send the link to this post to your significant other for some not-so-subtle hints ;). Read on for my Cricut Gift Guide curated especially for sewers!

Cricut gift guideCricut Maker

This is a no-brainer, and the first question I always ask when someone is wondering if they should get a Cricut Explore Air 2 or Maker is, “do you like to sew?” If they say yes, or sewing is even a future goal, I always recommend the Maker because of it’s ability to cut fabric and other materials that can be used in sewing projects. In fact, I previously shared a whole list of sewing projects that can be used with the Maker to get you inspired! The Maker cut the fabric, interfacing, and leather for this DIY heart purse tutorial – pretty cool!

Rotary Blade

Hand in hand with the Maker is the rotary blade, which I use so much that I wrote a whole post about it! It’s the magic tool that will roll over your fabrics and cut them with no effort on your part! I used it to cut scallops for these scalloped zipper pouches and it made sewing them a dream because they were cut so perfectly to begin with.

EasyPress 2

While the EasyPress 2 was is often marketed toward being used with Iron-on and Infusible Ink (and is awesome for that purpose), I have ended up using it in my sewing projects, even when the Maker isn’t involved. My favorite non-Maker related use for it is for attaching fusible interfacing to fabric, like I did for the DIY toddler backpack I mentioned earlier. The largest size EasyPress is 12×10″, and is my favorite for this purpose. It makes is so easy to fuse a large area of interfacing all at once, and let’s me get to the fun part of sewing faster!

Rotary Cutter

There are actually two different sizes of rotary cutters that Cricut offers (45mm and 60mm), and I have and use both! I try (emphasis on try…) to keep one just for fabrics and one for paper. I leave them hanging on my peg board for easy access, and they’re all I use for cutting out sewing projects, even if I’m not using my Maker in the project, like for my DIY Paperbag Skirt Tutorial. If you haven’t tried cutting out sewing patterns with a rotary cutter, just do it and you can thank me later ;).

Acrylic Ruler

Like peanut butter and bananas, I can’t talk about the rotary cutters without talking about the acrylic ruler. It’s perfect for anytime you need a nice straight cut, and the fact that it’s clear helps you to always know exactly where (and what!) you’re cutting.

Self-Healing Mat

Okay, let’s add chocolate to the peanut butter + banana combo, and add in the self-healing mat. Cut on it a thousand times and it won’t let you down! One side has a grid for measuring perfectly, and the other side is a mint color that makes any project more fun.

Iron-on

So far I’ve mentioned mainly Cricut tools that are great gifts for those who like to sew, but I wanted to share a few of my favorite materials as well. First up is Iron-on. It almost doesn’t need an explanation, but is like a secret weapon to add an extra bit of uniqueness to your sewing projects. It was perfect to add a cactus design to the Seafarer Top I sewed recently.

Cricut Genuine Leather

When I sew with leather, it makes me feel like I have a sewing superpower! Cricut Genuine Leather is the perfect weight that is nice and thick, but a sewing machine can still handle a couple layers of it. Let the Maker cut it for you, and you then sew it up for fun projects like this DIY leather coin pouch!

There you have it! A Cricut sewing gift guide that any sewer will love! Would you add anything to this list that you use and love?!
