A Greenpoint Cardigan – Sewing for Kindergarten

Now that I have two little girls, my boys don’t make it onto the blog nearly as often. Partly because I love sewing girly things so much, and partly because my boys are at ages where they wear clothes out quickly, and it’s just not always worth the time to make everyday clothes for them. So when my friend Mie’s Sewing for Kindergarten series came along, I thought it would be a great excuse to sew something special for Weston.

Yes, my little Weston is starting kindergarten! Today, in fact!

I used the Greenpoint Cardigan pattern from Hey June, which I love! I made one for Lola last year that I shared here. It’s such a versatile pattern for both boys and girls, and a super quick sew – the kind where it takes longer to piece the pages together and cut out than it does to sew.

I shortened the sleeves and left off the sleeve bands, and sewed him a size 4 per the pattern instructions – I wanted a slim fit and it ended up being perfect.

The striped knit fabric came from a polo of Joel’s that I’ve been saving for a refashion, and I paired it with a solid navy knit.

The metal buttons are my fav, and I’ve used them on every project that I can over the past year! I got a huge bag of them for $1 from the LA Fabric District.

I used my Silhouette machine, freezer paper, and fabric paint to make the “everything is awesome” shirt. Cause when you’re in kindergarten, everything IS awesome, right? Hopefully that’s how Weston will feel :). I will admit I didn’t do a perfect job and had some small paint runs, so I used a fabric marker to trace around some of the edges of the letters and cover up the runs. I don’t love how it turned out, but my five year old does, so that’s good enough I guess.

Mie has some fun questions that everyone on the tour is answering, so here you go…

Is this your first time sending a child to Kindergarten? If not, what number child is this?
It’s my second time, Wyatt started last year. That’s right, two in school this year!

Do you feel like crying or celebrating? And what about your child?
I have mixed emotions. Definitely excited for the adventure for him, and for a little free time (as free as it can get when you still have two others at home) for myself, but nervous to send him off into the world. He is excited and ready!

He’ll be going to public school.

What was your own first day of school like (if you remember ;-)?
Hmm, I don’t remember my first day, but I do remember that there was a really cool playhouse that we spent a lot of time in, and I remember that we all had nap time in the afternoon. I think times have changed…

I was thrilled when Weston requested to wear this for his first day. I’m pretty sure the white shirt will come home stained, but that will just make me feel better that it wasn’t perfect to begin with. Have a great day!
