Amy’s selection at Peek-a-Boo Fabric Shop is fabulous, and she generously sent me some beautiful Art Gallery Knits to play with. I couldn’t wait and already have another project sewn up as well that I’ll be sharing soon. And if you click here, I pretty much want ALL of these fabrics.

This knit was such a dream to sew with, and is even dreamier to wear! It is so soft and buttery, while still having a nice weight and great stretch recovery. Kind of the best of all worlds, I’d say.

I used my trusty Seafarer Top pattern for this top, but you can use any top pattern. Grab your fabric, and some accent knit fabric, and let’s get started!

1. Using the front of your shirt pattern, trim seam allowance from each side seam.
2. On each front side seam, draw a line marking the size you’d like your insert to be. We’ll later be cutting that piece on the fold, so it will be twice as wide and wrap around to the back as well.
3. Trim pattern piece along marking on each side.
4. Add seam allowance to each long side of triangle and back to each side seam of shirt front.
5. Place triangle cut out on fold of accent fabric (being certain stretch will be going across the body), and cut out. Repeat so you’ll have a triangle for each side.
6-7. Right sides together, stitch one long side of triangle to side seam of shirt front, matching bottom edges. Repeat on other side of shirt front with other triangle.
8. Assemble rest of shirt in regular fashion. When side seams are to be stitched, stitch back of shirt to shirt front side seams and remaining long edges of triangles.

  4. You could also use this technique as a refashion for a too-small top. That is how I am pinning it. I have a couple tops to try this with. Thanks for the idea!
