Simple Sewing Book Review and Giveaway!
I couldn’t be more excited to be sharing Katie from The Red Kitchen’s new book with you today! Katie did such a wonderful job with Simple Sewing, and fulfilled a huge need in the sewing world – a book that is made for true beginners, to help them learn the basics. With 30 projects included though, I know I’ll be turning to it again and again for ideas for simple, quick projects. I’m thinking teachers’ gifts, baby showers, and hopefully some things for myself too :).
First, let me show you the first project I’ve made using Katie’s book, the scrap flag garland. I’m helping to host a baby shower this weekend, so the timing was perfect and the garland was whipped up in no time.
I used a light pink flannel and burlap, and sewed it onto a narrow white rick rack because I thought it would be fitting for a baby shower.
I also enlarged the template a bit so I’d end up with a little extra length. I love the look of it, and can’t wait to use it with all the other shower decorations. Not that it doesn’t look fabulous on my fence…
What I love about Simple Sewing is that each step has a photograph to go along with it, which is rare for sewing books. A new sewer, even a child who’s just learning to sew, could look at the photos and follow along easily. My oldest, who’s six, has been asking me to teach him how to sew, and I think this book will be a huge help.
I have to also say that I was thrilled when Katie asked me if I would mind if she used one of the dolls she made from my Ruby Lou Doll Pattern in a photo for the book. It was fun to open it up out of the mail and see it on the cover!

The garland looks so sophisticated in these fabrics. Love the special detail of the rick rack. Hooray for Katie’s new book!
Thanks Kathy! I’m sure you’re so proud of Katie, as you should be!
I love the garland, so darling! That is neat that Wyatt wants to learn how to sew. I think I’m going to get Mia a small sewing machine for christmas and start teaching her.
