Bunk Bed
I recently mentioned that Joel had been working on a project for the boys, and I’m happy to say it’s done and in use! I think it was pretty obvious that it was a bunk bed, wasn’t it?! Joel designed the plan and built the bed, and is ready to move onto the next project on my wishlist (a dining room table!) :).
Now that Joel’s done his work, I guess I need to get busy and make some quilts to put on the beds. Any suggestions? I’m all out of ideas when it comes to boy quilts.
I have to say that it did make me sad to take down Wyatt’s blue bed that Joel made a couple of years ago, but a bunk bed makes more sense since the boys will likely sharing a room for a long time.
Wyatt and Weston, however, were not sad to see the blue bed find it’s new home in the garage. I can’t blame them though, what kid wouldn’t want a ladder in their room that they’re supposed to climb? They love it.
We debated whether to paint the bed or stain it. My first thoughts were to paint it, but the more I thought about it, I decided I’d rather do a dark stain. Maybe it scared me to have such a large piece of furniture painted, or maybe I’m just getting sick of painted furniture (exhibits A, B, and C), but either way I love how the finish turned out. I think in the long term I’ll be glad that I went with stain. Or I won’t be, and will end up painting it in a few years anyway :).
Oh, and have you heard about Indygo Junction’s Pattern Parade? The first stop is tomorrow at Nancy Zieman’s (from the “Sewing With Nancy” show) blog, and on Monday it’ll be stopping here at Sew Much Ado! Each stop will have a pattern AND fabric giveaway, and there’s another huge prize up for grabs at the end of the tour that you won’t want to miss (hello 15 yards of fabric? Yes, please!).
Make sure to check back on Monday to see what I made with one of IJ’s new patterns and to enter to win!
Great job Joel! Did you design it Abby? I definitely think you made the right descision to stain it! I bet your boys are in heaven!

That bed is awesome!! How cool that your husband made it!
Wow! It came out great!
Wow! He really did a great job! And thanks for the sweet, sweet shout-out for the flower clips. You are great!
Log Cabins with super hero fabrics has been a favorite with a silky type fabric backing.
I love the bed! It is so natural looking. He also did a great design! It looks like he used the same wood and stain my husband used on our dinning table. Here it is if you want to see it. http://www.1sewgreenmama.blogspot.com/2011/12/diy-farmhouse-table.html
For their quilt, I always like different textures in boys rooms.

I’m so impressed! I love the stain, too. So perfect and very masculine. Can’t wait to see what you figure out for the quilts!
WOW! Both you and your husband are very creative.
Must be nice to have a handy hubby and with your skills too. Great
