Plaid Flannel Schoolboy Vest

Both of my boys have recently outgrown the Schoolboy Vests I made them last spring, and I thought Christmas would be a great time to make new ones! I ended up going a different route with Wyatt (you may have seen some peeks of that on Instagram), but I can’t get over how handsome Weston looks in his vest.

He is a funny kid. I’m not sure we quite have him figured out yet, but he sure is fun to have in our family.

The pattern has options for both faux and functioning welt pockets, and I went with real ones this time. They’re much more fun than faux pockets to make, and make a vest look so professional. And it’s so much easier than you’d think!

I also added the back tie, which is handy when you want to make a vest with a little room to grow without looking big and boxy.

Like the plaid flannel for Hattie’s Christmas dress, I found this grey and turquoise flannel at Jo-Ann. It was great to sew with, and I may have even gone back and bought more in case I need some in the future…

I made his bowtie two years ago for Christmas, and I laughed when I looked back at that post and read that I made the straps a little too snug and my boys didn’t love wearing them. Two years, later, I’m still making them wear them, lol! Sounds like something I’d do… Maybe I should just take 10 minutes and fix the straps… Anyway, the tutorial I used is my fav bowtie tutorial, and is from A Lemon Squeezy Home. It’s been my go-to for bowtie making over the years – I love that they turn out nice and full.

I’m still using the same metal buttons that I’ve been using on everything that they don’t completely clash with (examples A, B, and C – which were the first versions of the Schoolboy Vest that I made for the boys last Christmas). They are so unique and I think they add a fun look. It’ll probably be awhile longer before I get sick of them. And did I mention that I paid $1 for a huge bag of them? Even better.

Next up I’ll be sharing Lola’s Christmas dress!
