Maggie May Tunic

I’ve mentioned before that Shauna from Shwin & Shwin’s Maggie May Tunic has been on my list to sew for a long time. I’ve seen so many cute versions around blogland, and finally got around to making one for Lola recently.

One of my very favorite versions is this one from Cherie of You & Mie. I love the dress version, but I think a tunic for Lola will be next. And perhaps out of purple linen ;).

I love the design of this pattern. There are so many different looks you can achieve depending on what fabrics you use.

I made size 12-18m, which I guessed would be quite roomy on Lola. She’s 11 months and quite petite for her age, but I wanted the dress to fit her in the summer when she’d be walking (aren’t kids clothes so much cuter once they can walk in them?!).

The sizing turned out just as I had hoped, and although Lola has plently of room to grow, it’s totally wearable now. I think it will be even cuter though once it fits more snugly.

I love the little cap sleeves that help to make it such a quick and easy dress to put together.

I’ve realized that I need to start a button collection now that I’m making dresses for Lola. In the past it seems like I rarely needed buttons, but I’ve been using them a lot of projects for her lately, and need to get a stash built up so I always have lots on hand.

I had been saving some of Doohickey Designs’ Dress Up Days fabric for the right project, and this was it! I was a bit worried that the print would be too large for this dress, but love how it turned out. And it felt great to finally cut into the fabric!

This year I’m in stash-bash mode, trying to use up the fabric that I already have, so I searched through my bins and finally decided on the turquoise fabric that will never die. I swear it’s a renewable fabric source. The more I use it, the more I seem to have.

I really like the combination of the playful print with the pinstripes. Kind of like a mullet, half business and half party :).

On that note… I obviously loved this pattern, and can’t wait to use it again!

Stay tuned later this week for a sneek peek at my new pattern!

  1. Love how that turned out! I need to make mine still! I have such a long list these days that is like your fabric–the more I cross off, the more is on it ;).

  2. Very cute, and such an adorable model! Although I’m a nervous Nelly watching her lean over the edge of that chair…hoping she doesn’t take a tumble on the pavement!! ;)

  3. Haha Lindsay, no worries! She’s quite steady on her own but I made Joel stand there on guard too for safety’s sake :).

  4. Oh my… love the pattern. It is so cute, especially with the fabrics you chose (and the baby of course has something to do with it!) I’m going to look for it right now!

  5. This dress is amazing!! And really, your photos are beautiful. I just take pictures with my iPad…I’m going to have to invest in some good equipment. Do you think I can get something good for $500-$1000? It has to be something user friendly…I don’t know much about photography…I don’t want to spend more until I know what I’m doing.

  6. So cute and great fabric choices! Thanks for introducing me to a new great pattern to try! How long did it fit her? My twins are 11 months now and it’s tricky to find the right size. They are large for their age.
