Halloween ghost pillows have been all the rage the past few years, and after seeing them go viral yet again this year, I thought to myself, “Why BUY when you can DIY?!” So here we are, and I’m sharing this DIY Ghost Pillow Pattern (free!) with you. With both illustrations and a video tutorial, I’ll teach you how to make a ghost pillow that’s perfect to add to your Halloween decor.

The original Pottery Barn ghost pillow seemed to really ignite the whole ghost pillow frenzy, and many other retailers have since followed suit with their own unique versions. Even Pottery Barn even came up with a new version, Gus the Ghost which I have to admit is pretty cute (as is the dog version and “Ms. Gus” version).

But as adorable as they are, I just don’t ever plan to spend $80 or more on a Halloween pillow when I can make my own for a fraction of the price (and as we know that’s not always the case with sewing ;)). Plus, making our own is much more fun, right?!

Skill Level

This Halloween sewing project is great for all skill levels, from beginner (perhaps your kids would like to join in on this project?) to seasoned sewists. The trickiest part is sewing through the bulky sherpa fabric and curves on the sewing pattern, but if you set your sewing machine to a slow speed and take your time, even a beginner can complete this with confidence.

Finished Size

Using the free pattern linked below, you’ll create a 16″ tall Halloween ghost pillow, not too big and not too small!

  1. Pin and stitch the eyes and mouth to the right side of one body piece, following the placement marked on the pattern using a straight or zig zag stitch.
  2. Right sides together, pin and stitch the two body pieces together along raw edges using a 1/2″ seam allowance, leaving a 4″ opening on one side. Carefully clip close to stitch lines at arm corners.
  3. Turn ghost pillow right side out through opening and stuff with polyester stuffing. I like to fill the arms first and then work from the top down, ensuring that the curved areas are well stuffed.
  4. Turn the opening raw edges under 1/2″ and hand stitch closed using a ladder stitch. You’re done the final step!

Great job! I hope you enjoyed this free Halloween ghost pillow pattern and that it adds the perfect touch to your Halloween home decor!
