DIY Backpack Fit at Different Ages

Way back in 2016, I originally made the pattern as a toddler backpack, but have since realized it has grown perfectly with my girls by simply adding to the strap length. When making this newest version, I also created a video tutorial to add to the original post, and you can also watch it on our YouTube channel!

You can see how the size has worked on her at 3, 9, and now almost 12 years old!

With the added length for this Conversation Heart backpack, it even fits me as well!

Materials to Make a DIY Conversation Heart Backpack

I used light pink Ventana twill from Robert Kauffman for the bag exterior and an ice-dyed look turquoise quilting cotton from Riley Blake for the lining.

I love to use fusible fleece in backpacks when you want it to have body and shape without it being either too stiff or too saggy.

The “BE MINE” text was added with Cricut Iron-on in red and my Cricut Joy Xtra. The Joy Xtra has been my favorite crafting buddy lately – I love that it’s small and easy to take wherever I happen to be creating.

I also used my 10×12″ Cricut EasyPress to fuse the interfacing and fusible fleece (one of my favorite uses for it!), and my EasyPress Mini to help press the curves and tight spots.
